Over the last decade, awareness of depression as an illness has grown. However, people are still confused about how it manifests itself in everyday life.
We sometimes hear family members and friends of people who suffer from mental illness say, “He’s just lazy”, “She lacks motivation”, or “This person doesn’t have the drive to succeed”. Such remarks and opinions make the affected person feel even worse.
Let’s find out how it looks or affects our everyday lives.
- The symptoms of depression begin with feeling a sense of dullness or lethargy: Many clients are confused about experiencing depression or not. Well, it starts with feeling tired and tired and making every day seem like a struggle.
- Decrease in functionality: When living every day becomes a struggle, and if work and school are affected, motivation is diminished. Therefore, things that initially brought us happiness may no longer excite us and result in a decrease in our enjoyment of them.
- Lack of self-care: One can find themselves in a state of mind where they are not interested in taking care of themselves. Getting out of bed, showering, and taking care of yourself to look presentable may also seem like a huge task. It is also common for people to lose weight when they are depressed because they don’t want to eat.
- Withdrawing from our social circle: Sometimes, our sad mood makes us blind and causes us to view things negatively. Often, we become sensitive to what people say to us, and we feel like no one will understand us if we express our distress. This causes us to withdraw from our loved ones, which in turn causes a sense of loneliness.
- Depression with high functioning: Many people have the life they want, whether it is a family, a good academic record, or a good job. But all of that may have brought them no happiness, and it may have just been something that felt like a “duty” to them. This could also indicate depression in some people.
Depression is more than just feeling sad, it is a long-term state of low mood and loss of interest in activities that were once enjoyed. So, we need to keep in mind that any lifestyle change that feels difficult in day-to-day life but continues for a time is worth talking about.
Do not hold yourself back or neglect these symptoms. These feelings sometimes feel small or you think of controlling on your own for the current moment, but when it accumulates, the effects of it are much more difficult to deal with.
